Biography

Basma Khalifa is a Sudanese multi-disciplinary creative, with a background that spans across Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Northern Ireland, Scotland and now London. After over a decade of experience in the fashion industry as a Fashion Stylist working across titles such as Vogue, Elle UK and ES Magazine, Basma then turned her attention to documentaries, with her debut feature-length documentary which was broadcast on BBC3 followed BBC1. The documentary garnered over 10 million views, worldwide syndication, earning Basma a nomination for “Newcomer of the year” at the Edinburgh TV Festival. Her contributions to outlets the likes of the BBC, ITN and C4 have solidified Basma’s reputation as a keen eye for nuanced centring sectors of society often underserved.

Basma has also directed films for brands such as Meta, Apple, BBC and Netflix. She has worked with A-list celebrities such as Alicia Keys and champions work that spotlights people of colour and in particular the SWANA region. She has recently shot and directed her first feature length documentary centred around two sisters in Cairo, Egypt, and written/directed her first short film with centres around the ritual of henna and how it guides a womans life. Basma is an accomplished writer, contributing to various titles such as The Telegraph, Independent, The Guardian and continues to consult for brands to assist them in reaching target markets.

Basma has recently launched a creative and production studio - Zola Studios which aims to empower and provide space to tell stories for creatives from the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) and beyond.
